Ball is generally known as the watch that ran America's railroad.
Webb C. Ball was the first watch maker to use time signals (the system that set the standards for the railroads
and helped establish accuracy and uniformity in timekeeping).
The US railroad officials commissioned Webb C. Ball as their General Time Inspector, in order to establish
precision standards and a reliable timepiece inspection system for Railroad chronometers. He established strict
guidelines for the manufacturing of sturdy, reliable precision timepieces, including resistance to magnetism,
reliability of time keeping in 5 positions, isochronism, power reserve, accompanied with record keeping of the
reliability of the watch on each regular inspection.
Ball watches feature the legendary patented Tritium Self-Powered Micro Gas Light Tubes (3H) on the dials and
hands of their watches. This provides a superior long-life brightness which is some 100 times brighter than
the luminova used by most watchmaskers and has a lifespan of around 25 years. It works without recharging
from the sun or using draining batteries so you can read the dial easily in the brightest daylight or deepest night.
